Usernames You Don't Want On Your System

Posted on 01 May 2013

Yes, some usernames should be forbidden in certain contexts or platforms. For example, usernames that are offensive, derogatory, discriminatory, or promote hate speech should be prohibited to maintain a safe and inclusive online environment.

Platforms and websites usually have their own guidelines and terms of service that specify the types of usernames that are not allowed. For instance, social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have strict policies against usernames that contain hate speech, racial slurs, or profanity. In addition, usernames that impersonate others or violate trademarks or copyrights may also be forbidden.

It is important to note that while platforms may have policies against certain types of usernames, it can be challenging to enforce them effectively. Some users may try to circumvent the rules by using variations or misspellings of banned words, for example. As such, platforms must use a combination of automated filters and human moderators to identify and remove inappropriate usernames.

Based on experience with various projects, here's the list of usernames that users probably shouldn't use on any given system. Curses are excluded. So, during the registration sequence, it may be a good idea to check username against this list.

Additionally, there are many other categories of usernames to consider:

  1. Racist, sexist, or homophobic slurs: Usernames that contain offensive terms or slurs that target a particular race, gender, or sexual orientation are typically prohibited on most platforms.
  2. Impersonation: Usernames that impersonate other people, such as celebrities or public figures, are often forbidden on social media platforms.
  3. Vulgar or explicit language: Usernames that contain profanity or sexually explicit terms may be prohibited on certain platforms, particularly those aimed at minors.
  4. Trademark or copyright infringement: Usernames that violate trademarks or copyrights, such as using a brand name without permission, may be forbidden on some platforms.
  5. Promotion of hate speech: Usernames that promote hate speech or violence towards a particular group or individual may be prohibited on most platforms.

These are just a few examples, and the specific types of usernames that are forbidden may vary depending on the platform or context. It is always important to review the guidelines and terms of service of each platform before creating a username.
